The Printing Booklet Guide: Tips and Details

Creating artwork for printing can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially with the different requirements involved.

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand how to prepare your files for Booklet printing for a smooth printing process:

1. Understanding the Binding and Layout

Spine: If you’re printing a booklet with a perfect binding (common for thicker booklets), you’ll need to account for the spine. The spine is the edge where all the pages are bound together, and it needs to be considered in your design. Ensure that any important text or images are not too close to the spine area to avoid them being lost or distorted during binding.
Pages: Your booklet must have a specific number of pages.

2. Saving Your File in the Correct Format

Always save your artwork as a single-page format. This means each page of your booklet is saved as an individual file, not spread across two pages.
For booklets that will be perfect bound, leave a margin of 10mm from the spine edge to avoid losing any content during the binding process.

3. Managing Colors and Images

Solid Colors: If your design has areas of solid black or gray, ensure you fill them using only the black (K) in the CMYK color model. This prevents color shifts during printing.
Image Conversion: Convert all images in your artwork to CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black), the standard color model for printing. Images should have a resolution between 300 dpi (dots per inch) and 600 dpi to ensure clarity.
Ink Coverage: The total ink coverage (the sum of percentages in CMYK) should not exceed 250%. Exceeding this may cause printing issues, like smudging.

4. Page Bleed and Safe Zone

Bleed: This is the area beyond the edge of your final printed page, usually 3mm on all sides. It’s essential for designs that have elements reaching the edge of the page to avoid white edges after trimming.
Safe Zone: Keep all vital text and images within a “safe zone,” which is about 10mm from the page’s edge. This ensures nothing important gets cut off during trimming.

5. Final Checks Before Submission

Review your artwork thoroughly before submission. We follow your artwork exactly as submitted, without referencing any mockups you may have provided. Ensure there are no typos, misplaced elements, or other errors.
